FJORD STONE

I don't know if I give off some sort of a sense of knowing shit,

but I really don't.

CRITICAL ROLE

PLAYER
NAME: Kiwi
PRONOUNS: she/her
AGE: 36
PLURK: [plurk.com profile] atomic_kiwi
DISCORD:Atomic_Kiwi
TIME ZONE:Central

ROLE
Role: Familiar
Role Qualities/Attributes: Fjord tries his best to be a lone wolf, for all that wolves are happiest with a pack, a thing he will eventually get. Physically he will manifest the ears and tail of a wolf, and be able to turn into a black wolf as well.
Role Reasoning: I feel like at this stage, Fjord is very much a follower, whether he says so or not. It tends to be a safer standpoint for him to act as more a supporting player than anything. If no one else steps up, he might try and act the leader just out of worry of who might fill that power void, but he's not got the self-confidence to pull it off. I'd like to see being a Familiar force him to really confront that aspect of himself. I think unpacking how and why he's like this might help him get a bit more secure in his sense of self and confidence and maybe even nudge him towards actually learning to trust and rely on the others around him rather than just paying lip service to the idea and inwardly fearing abandonment the moment he's not useful enough.

PERSONALITY
Surface level, Fjord comes across as a confident, capable man, with a sensible outlook on things. Practical and respectful, he seems the sort to engender good will and trust, with an amicable sort of nature.

Or at least that's the face he shows the world. And it shifts- depending on who he speaks with, Fjord adjusts his mask to suit expectations, a bit more stern and taciturn when he's expected to take charge or handle a threat, a bit more friendly and open to those he was friends with. Always with the thought in the back of his head towards his race and how that made people perceive him, the preconceived notions that colored how they would see whatever he did. So no matter the mask he wore, no matter how friendly, or flirty, stern or threatening, he always had to seem in control of himself and his emotions. Temper wasn't allowed, as people would think him savage, but he also had to come across as strong, lest he be considered weak. No vulnerabilities could be shown. He had to appear humble, as the ambition he had to grow would be seen as threatening.

It left him somewhat damaged to grow up with such coping mechanisms, a lack of... certainty in himself that went beyond the simple self-esteem issues that came with seeing himself as lesser, the way he felt he didn't measure up. Not human enough to blend into the culture of the city he'd been raised in, and not orc enough to mix well with the half-orcs he'd come across on rare occasion, he found himself at a loss trying to prove himself, to win approval of any sort, driving him to make unfortunate decisions in the hopes of gaining it.

His life has been a difficult thing and from an early age he learned about how cruel people could be to those different. Learned to hide behind charm and bluster in equal turns to protect himself, using words as his shield as using violence would only add fuel to the fire, would only end with him the villain. And he's spent his life trying to reason out that hurt, finding flaws in himself that weren’t there, just to justify it all. Because if it wasn’t there then the world was just plain cruel and that couldn’t be true. It encouraged him to improve in his ability to lie, to improve in his ability to pretend to be something, anything that he wasn't, to ignore the idea that at the end of the day, he wasn't a person worth being.

Underneath the issues, Fjord is at his core a good man. He believes in fair play, in loyalty to those who one counts as friends or family. He does his best to live up to an expectation that he doesn't feel he'll ever meet, but can't bring himself not to try and find some way to be... better. To encourage others to do the same, even if he can be at times brusque about it. But always it seemed, able to be kinder to others in their troubles and failings than he was with himself. Despite his life, despite his troubles, he still has a sense of humor, dry and maybe a bit dark at times, but he's still willing to laugh at sillier things, like the antics of his friends. Is, despite expectations, more intelligent than he lets others assume, though this can turn around on him, letting him overthink things to his detriment.

And even amongst the Nein, he still doesn't seem willing to lose his masks. Afraid that no matter his growing loyalty and affection for them, that if they saw the reality of him, if they saw how weak he was without his powers and abilities, that he would be a problem. And as he'd learned so often in his life, problems got dealt with, that fear of being abandoned, left behind driving him to make the poor choice to hide the way his interactions with his patron worsened, the fear he was feeling over that. If it was just hurting him it was fine. He could handle it better than he could handle being left behind by the only family he had.

Sometimes the reality shone through. Hints of something softer under the brash, confidence, a deep well of compassion, a sense of humor that was almost silly. Vulnerability and an almost aching need for companionship and bonds that he'd gone so long without.

ABILITIES
Skills:
-Swimming and diving
-Woodworking: He spent most of his childhood doing this- if given tools that properly suited him, he'd likely be better at the skill than he assumes he'd be at the moment.
-Sailing, and related skills such as ropework, rigging work, climbing, ship repair, mending and maintaining sails, and the general labor required to keep a merchant vessel afloat.
-First Mate/Quartermaster: He was promoted aboard the ship several times and became involved in the administrative duties that are required such as maintaining manifests, inventories of cargo and supplies, and otherwise assisting in directing crewmates where they need to go when the captain is elsewhere, including during an emergency.
-Navigation: He needed at least a basic knowledge to fulfill his duties, not to the level of a navigator but enough to suss out the basics and understand the directions offered by a ship's navigator.
-Singing: Fjord has a general knowledge of shanties and the sorts of songs one might catch in a tavern on shore leave. He's not about to make a career of it, but is passably decent.
-Acting: Fjord was trained by Vandran to observe and mimic others, and has become quite good at it as a way to either blend in unobtrusively, or to try and manipulate people and situations to his benefit.
-swordplay
-General survival: While he's no ranger, Fjord isn't unfamiliar with enduring less than ideal circumstances and the general ideas of survival such as gearing for the situation, minding your rations, and keeping a weather eye on your surroundings.

Canon Abilities: Wikia (This is the overview of everything he ever has)
Lvl 5 Character Sheet (I just pulled everything that he has been proven to have up until 2x25 and added descriptions for ease of reference to his current ability set)

Nerfs for game purposes:
-Any spell that controls/charms/or otherwise manipulates another character would require ooc permission, and naturally would not work on Thirteen and their iterations. (Opt-out here)
-Any spell that teleports (like Blink) will not give him access to anything he wouldn't be able to get to on his own. (can't cross a plot-given barrier or locked door, or wind up somewhere restricted from pcs, etc)
